SUDDEN DARKNESS It happened this weekend. A 24 hour rucking and land navigation event hosted by MIchael David Castillo and Range University. Shredder is an absolutely great teacher. He taught the basics of land navigation using nothing but a compass, protractor, map, ranger beads, and pace count. We plotted grids on a map using the UTM grid system. We shot an azimuth using a compass. Adjusted for magnetic declination then from a known starting point navigated to each point on the ground. Over the next 24 hours, day and night, we plotted and navigated through the piney curtain, located in the Sam Houston National Park. Total distance traveled were anywhere from 25 to 35 miles. Everyone worked together as a team and laughed at the adversities and challenges. There were many. Everyone left with a new skill set. I highly recommend any event from Range University and "Castleman". The skills we learned are priceless.
